The Free Speech Movement Movie - Website Coming Soon...
Their battle for free speech on campus became a war for liberty in America...
It was a fiery summer with Civil Rights violence, a fierce Presidential campaign and warnings of impending nuclear war. In this volatile atmosphere students returned to campus in the Fall of 1964 to learn that the University of California had banned Free Speech.
Putting their futures on the line, the students spoke out when for the first time in history a police car entered campus to enforce the ban. Students spontaneously encircled the car, prevented arrests and over the next 32 hours symbolically exercised free speech from the roof of the police car.
Their voices were heard across the country and triggered an ongoing debate over the nature of American society. It marked the end of the innocent 1950s and the start of the turbulent 1960s. During the rest of the semester the students and administration battled to win the argument, the faculty and the nation. What started in the Fall as a dispute over distributing pamphlets, climaxed in the winter when a thousand students occupied campus buildings and the Governor ordered in armed police.
The issues raised from the roof of the police car are still swirling around the national debate to this day.
